Carnival drives economic and cultural growth in Brazilian cities
Carnival celebrations in Brazil are being highlighted for their significant impact on local economies and the creative industry. In Florianópolis, a lecture titled ‘The Value of the Party: Carnival and Creative Economy’ will discuss how the festivities generate work and income beyond the event days. Researcher Daniele Canedo emphasizes that while the party is driven by social mobilization, consistent public partnerships are essential to scale these initiatives and support the year-round cultural work involved.
In São João da Barra, Rio de Janeiro, the local Carnival has established itself as a major regional event, attracting a floating population that can triple the city's demographics. The municipality has invested nearly R$ 1 million, including a 5.3% increase in resources for carnival entities, to foster a creative industry that supports families through crafts, sewing, hospitality, and commerce. The event is supported by integrated security and expanded urban services to manage the economic and logistical demands.
