Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett leads second UN Secretary-General straw poll

Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett of Guyana has emerged as the frontrunner in the second informal UN Security Council straw poll to succeed Antonio Guterres as Secretary-General. In this round of non-binding voting, Rodrigues-Birkett secured eight 'encourage' votes, three 'discourage' votes, and four 'no opinion' votes.

Following her are Rebeca Grynspan of Costa Rica and Rafael Mariano Grossi of Argentina, both of whom received seven 'encourage' votes. The results represent a shift from the first straw poll, where Grynspan held the lead. Other candidates included Macky Sall of Senegal, who moved up to fourth place, and Olara Otunnu of Uganda.

Ivonne Baki of Ecuador, a recent addition to the race, received zero 'encourage' votes. The straw poll process is used by the 15 members of the Security Council to gauge support and narrow the field. To be officially recommended, a candidate must eventually secure at least nine votes and avoid a veto from any of the five permanent members.
