Carolei investigation: Judge denies detention for former mayor Iannucci

An investigation led by the Cosenza Prosecutor's Office into allegations of water adulteration, corruption, and bid-rigging in Carolei has resulted in a judicial decision to deny precautionary detention for former mayor Francesco Iannucci and six other defendants.

Judge Claudia Pingitore rejected requests from prosecutor Antonio Bruno Tridico for custodial measures, noting that the resignations of Iannucci and his council members reduced the immediate necessity for such measures. While the judge acknowledged the gravity of the alleged conduct and the existence of evidentiary weight, no jail time will be imposed at this stage.

The case centers on the use of water from a spring funded by the Calabria Region. Defense attorneys for Iannucci presented documentation, including previous Arpacal analyses, suggesting the water was safe and compliant with standards. Local residents have expressed concerns regarding water shortages following the investigation.
