Carolina Ache found to have omitted key communications in Marset investigation

An administrative investigation by Uruguay’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has concluded that Carolina Ache, the former Undersecretary and current Ambassador to Portugal, omitted key information regarding her communications during the Sebastián Marset passport scandal.

Ache previously testified that she had only two communications with Guillermo Maciel, the former Undersecretary of the Ministry of the Interior, concerning Marset’s detention in the United Arab Emirates. However, documentation reveals a third, significant exchange via WhatsApp. In this interaction, Maciel reportedly warned Ache that Marset was a “very dangerous and heavy” drug trafficker and that his eventual release would be “terrible.”

The investigation also noted that Ache failed to provide all requested messages and that at least ten emails related to the issuance of Marset’s passport were deleted. While Ache claimed she lacked access to her institutional email from her computer, the Ministry’s legal team has supported the findings of the investigation, which highlights discrepancies in her accounts of both the medium and timing of her communications with Maciel.
