Carolina Hurricanes sign captain Jordan Staal to extension

The Carolina Hurricanes have announced a one-year contract extension for team captain Jordan Staal. The agreement covers the 2027-28 season and includes a $900,000 base salary, a $4 million signing bonus, and up to $5.1 million in performance bonuses.

Staal, 38, is the reigning Conn Smythe Trophy winner following his performance in the recent playoffs, which helped the Hurricanes secure their second Stanley Cup championship. Hurricanes general manager Eric Tulsky described Staal as the ‘bedrock of the culture’ within the organization, citing his leadership as a primary factor in the team's recent success.

A native of Thunder Bay, Ontario, Staal has spent 14 seasons with the Hurricanes and has served as captain since 2019. He originally entered the NHL as the second overall pick by the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2006, where he won his first Stanley Cup in 2009.
