Carolina Panthers fire defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero

The Carolina Panthers have fired defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero and defensive passing game coordinator Jonathan Cooley following a 27-19 loss to the Green Bay Packers. The decision comes after a difficult stretch where the defense allowed 70 points over two games, including a 43-13 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Head coach Dave Canales has promoted defensive line coach Todd Wash to interim defensive coordinator for the remainder of the season. Wash, who has 31 years of coaching experience including a stint as defensive coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars, will assume play-calling responsibilities.

The Panthers' defensive struggles have been significant, ranking among the worst in the NFL for points allowed and rushing defense. The unit allowed 59 points in the season opener against the Chicago Bears and has struggled with injuries to key players in the secondary, such as Jaycee Horn and Mike Jackson. Despite these defensive lapses, the Panthers hold a 3-4 record and are currently tied with the Atlanta Falcons for first place in the NFC South.
