Minnesota Vikings' quarterback battle intensifies as training camp opens

The Minnesota Vikings began their 2026 training camp at the TCO Performance Center, with head coach Kevin O'Connell keeping the quarterback competition between J.J. McCarthy and Kyler Murray open. O'Connell has not announced a starter and has the two quarterbacks sharing first‑team reps while they adjust to the new offensive system.

Analyst Benjamin Solak noted that McCarthy appears to have an early lead, while Murray is still learning the playbook and receiving limited reps. Both players signed contracts this offseason—Murray on a one‑year veteran‑minimum deal, with the Arizona Cardinals still covering part of his salary, and McCarthy as the Vikings’ 2024 first‑round pick.

Wide receiver Justin Jefferson reiterated that the competition remains “open,” emphasizing communication and the need for both quarterbacks to connect with the offense before a decision is made.
