Caroll H. Spriggs II has been sworn in as the 24th Maryland State Fire Marshal, becoming the first African American to lead the office in its 132-year history. The appointment was made by Maryland State Police Superintendent Col. Michael A. Jackson for a six-year term.

Spriggs is a 53-year-old veteran with 38 years of experience at the Huntingtown Volunteer Fire Department. His career includes roles as deputy fire chief for both the City of Annapolis and the Prince George’s County Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department, as well as work as a task force officer with the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

In his new role, Spriggs pledged to lead the agency with “scientific rigor” and an “unrelenting commitment to justice,” focusing on fire and explosion investigations, code enforcement, and public safety education. He succeeds Chief Deputy Jason Mowbray.
