Carpi joins NatConnect2030 biodiversity pact

The Municipality of Carpi has officially joined the NatConnect2030 biodiversity pact. This initiative is promoted by Legambiente Lombardia as part of the European Union’s Life program, which focuses on environmental protection and climate action.

The primary objective of the Life-NatConnect2030 project is to strengthen the integrated management of the Natura 2000 Network. Key strategic actions include the ecological restoration of habitats and species, enhancing ecological connectivity, mitigating climate change impacts, and reducing the influence of invasive alien species.

As part of this commitment, Carpi is incorporating 14 pilot areas into the protection network. These areas are currently testing reduced mowing practices, covering a protected green expanse of over 90,000 square meters. Microclimatic data indicates that maintaining higher grass levels serves as a natural thermal insulator, reducing ground surface temperatures by 2 to 4 degrees Celsius compared to air temperature, thereby helping to mitigate the urban heat island effect.
