Carrefour-Feuilles families begin returning home in Port-au-Prince, Haiti

After three years of displacement, dozens of families are gradually moving back to the Carrefour-Feuilles district in the south of Port-au-Prince. The returns are voluntary and encouraged by authorities, even though sporadic gunfire still occurs nearby and security remains fragile.

Residents describe the former displacement camps as overcrowded and unsanitary, with some families saying they could no longer endure sleeping on the floor. The neighbourhood, once a major commercial hub, bears extensive damage from years of gang occupation: many homes are destroyed, infrastructure is ruined and basic social services have not yet been restored.

Haitian security forces, including local brigadiers and the National Police, continue patrols and surveillance to prevent a gang resurgence. Inhabitants are calling for cleanup, reconstruction and stronger state support for the volunteers who help keep the area secure.
