Carrefour cuts 2026 profit guidance following unrest in France

Carrefour has lowered its 2026 financial guidance, citing an unprecedented social and security situation in France. The retailer expects adjusted earnings per share to remain stable or see only slight growth, a significant reduction from previous high single-digit growth projections. The company also revised its recurring operating margin improvement target to between 0 and 15 basis points, down from 25 basis points, and expects net free cash flow to decline slightly.

The decision follows widespread riots, looting, and curfews in France that directly affected approximately 50 stores. Chief Financial Officer Matthieu Malige stated that direct costs from the unrest, including stolen goods, damaged equipment, and lost trading due to closures, amount to tens of millions of euros. The company also noted increased expenditures for security measures, such as hiring private guards.

Despite these challenges in its home market, Carrefour reported a 2.3% increase in third-quarter like-for-like global sales, reaching nearly €22.7 billion. Performance varied by region: sales in Spain rose 2.1%, and in Brazil, they reached €5.14 billion, driven by the Atacadão brand. However, the company also reduced its annual capital investment forecast for France to €1.6 billion.
