Carrefour to close Tucumán supermarket and expand Express format
Carrefour is closing its historic supermarket location on San Martín Street in San Miguel de Tucumán, Argentina, this November. The decision follows a failure to reach a new lease agreement with the property owner, who reportedly sought a monthly rent of 67 million pesos, a figure the company deemed unsustainable for the branch's profitability.
To mitigate the closure, Carrefour plans to expand its presence in the capital through its proximity format, Carrefour Express. The company aims to open up to seven Express stores within the four avenues by the end of the year, with a goal of reaching 15 such locations by April next year.
The company has committed to job security for the 37 employees currently working at the San Martín location, all of whom will be reassigned to the new Express branches. Additionally, Carrefour has reached an agreement with the commercial union to respect existing salaries and seniority.
