Carrier Pidge app uses virtual pigeons to slow digital messaging

A new mobile application called Carrier Pidge aims to challenge the culture of instant connectivity by introducing a slow-paced, satirical messaging experience. Developed by iOS programmer Noah Iarrobino as a three-week side project, the app uses virtual carrier pigeons to deliver messages based on real-world GPS distances.

Messages are attached to virtual birds that fly at a base speed of 110 mph, with a 25% speed variation to simulate fatigue or weather conditions. While local messages arrive in seconds, cross-country delivery can take approximately 22 hours, and international messages may take several days. Users can track their pigeon’s progress in real-time on a live map.

The app incorporates high stakes and a vintage aesthetic; each pigeon has a 0.2% chance of dying mid-flight, which results in the permanent loss of the message. The interface features a ‘Flock’ for contacts and an ‘Aviary’ for conversations, utilizing a parchment-style design to mimic historical letters. The project is intended as a commentary on ‘slow social media,’ encouraging users to embrace more deliberate communication.
