Carris faces criticism over delayed investigation into Glória Elevator accident

Nearly one year after the Glória Elevator accident, which resulted in 16 deaths and 24 injuries, Carris has not yet opened any disciplinary proceedings regarding the incident. The Lisbon-based transport company stated that disciplinary evaluations must wait for the conclusions of ongoing investigations, which include a criminal inquiry by the Public Ministry, a safety investigation by the GPIAAF, and an internal Carris probe.

There are concerns that certain disciplinary infractions may expire due to statutes of limitations if they are not classified as crimes or if those involved are acquitted in criminal court.

The Portuguese Communist Party (PCP) has criticized the delays and lack of resources in the investigation. Citing preliminary reports from the GPIAAF, the PCP highlighted potential maintenance failures, fraudulent inspection records, and insufficient supervision of outsourced maintenance services. These findings appear to contradict previous assurances from the Lisbon City Council and Carris regarding strict adherence to maintenance protocols.
