Carris Metropolitana expands fleet with 37 electric buses
Carris Metropolitana is adding 37 electric buses to its fleet in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area, representing a 16 million euro investment. The expansion, announced by Transportes Metropolitanos de Lisboa (TML) president Carlos Humberto, aims to increase operational capacity and reduce the environmental impact of public transit.
Despite the fleet increase, Humberto highlighted significant logistical challenges, specifically citing a lack of space at major Lisbon bus terminals such as Oriente, Sete Rios, and Entrecampos. He noted that terminal congestion has prevented the operation of certain routes and schedules due to safety concerns.
TML is currently seeking authorization from the Court of Auditors to expand service offerings, as existing contract limits are insufficient to meet growing demand. Future growth through 2027 remains dependent on terminal availability, driver recruitment, and traffic conditions.
