Carrot powdery mildew spreads in Slovak gardens amid hot, dry summer

The Central Institute of Agricultural Research warns that carrot powdery mildew (Erysiphe heraclei) is affecting carrots, parsley, parsnip, celery and fennel across Slovakia. The disease first appears as a white fungal coating on leaves and stems, later weakening plants and causing loss of leaf tissue. Warm, dry conditions this summer have created an environment conducive to the fungus, especially in densely planted or poorly ventilated crops. Excess nitrogen and rapid shifts between drought and heavy watering further increase susceptibility.

Preventive measures include regular weed removal, proper irrigation to avoid sudden moisture changes, and ensuring good air circulation. Treatment is recommended at the first sign of symptoms, using products such as Askon, Score, sulfur preparations, Thiovit Jet, or the biological agent Serenade Aso, applied according to label instructions regarding dose, pre‑harvest intervals and number of applications.
