Carson Hocevar accused of intentional brake checking Austin Cindric

Data and analyst reviews from the Martinsville Speedway race suggest that Spire Motorsports driver Carson Hocevar intentionally brake checked Team Penske driver Austin Cindric multiple times during the second stage. SMT telemetry data analyzed by Steve Letarte and Jamie McMurray showed significant spikes in brake pressure, indicating Hocevar applied the brakes abruptly on the straightaway before entering turns.

The repeated contact caused terminal damage to Cindric’s No. 2 car, which featured a softer front bumper designed for short track racing. While Hocevar denied any ill intent, characterizing the incident as short track racing, analysts and fellow drivers have criticized the maneuver. Denny Hamlin stated that Hocevar “weaponed” his car, while Dale Earnhardt Jr. noted that the braking appeared “absolutely obvious.”

Cindric described the incident over the radio as a “temper tantrum.” There is ongoing speculation regarding whether NASCAR will issue penalties for the incident, as Hamlin argued that intentional wrecking should be penalized regardless of whether the driver admits fault.
