Carsten Linnemann Takes Helm of German Health Ministry Amid Care Reform Push

Carsten Linnemann has been appointed as Germany's new Federal Minister of Health, succeeding Nina Warken. He inherits a health system described as a "continuous construction site" and faces the urgent task of advancing a contested care reform that proposes stricter criteria for care grades and reduced pension contributions for caregiving relatives. The reform has met resistance from the leaders of the eastern German states—Mario Voigt, Sven Schulze and Michael Kretschmer—who argue that higher care quotas and lower incomes in their regions would increase municipal costs.

The German Dental Technicians Association (VDZI) welcomed Linnemann’s appointment, urging reliable economic conditions and a constructive dialogue with health‑care providers. The association highlighted the need to cut unnecessary bureaucracy, ensure fair competition for dental‑prosthetic manufacturers, and support the sector’s small‑ and medium‑sized enterprises as part of a broader, long‑term health‑policy strategy.
