Cartagena begins removal of Calle del Carmen shading system
The Cartagena City Council has begun the removal of the 'Teselas' shading system from Calle del Carmen in the historic district. The dismantling process, managed by the company Pegiro, is being conducted at night to minimize disruption to pedestrians.
The removal of the textile diamond-shaped covers and metal structures is expected to take approximately six weeks. This timeline accounts for the careful classification of cabling required to ensure efficient reinstallation in the future. The removal allows residents to view local festivities, such as Carnival and Holy Week processions, from their balconies and windows.
The shading system, which was originally installed in May, was designed to improve thermal comfort by reducing temperatures by up to 6 ºC, according to studies by the Polytechnic University. The City Council plans to reinstall the lightweight, detachable structure once high temperatures return following the Holy Week period.
