Cartagena tourist pays for repairs after toppling historical statue

A tourist has apologized and paid for the repair of a historical statue in Cartagena after causing it to fall in the Getsemaní neighborhood. The incident occurred on October 10 at the Plaza de la Trinidad, where a woman was filmed using the sculpture of priest Nicolás Mauricio de Umaña y Rodríguez as support while dancing, causing the monument to lose balance and fall.

Following a public appeal by Mayor Dumek Turbay to identify the individual responsible for the damage to the heritage site, the woman, identified as Laura, presented herself to district officials on October 13. She expressed her intention to make amends and stated that she did not intend to disrespect the city or damage the structure.

She has covered the restoration costs, which were paid to sculptor Óscar Noriega, who was tasked with repairing the piece.
