Cartaginés prepares for Copa Centroamericana clash against Saprissa

Club Sport Cartaginés is preparing to face Deportivo Saprissa in the first leg of the Copa Centroamericana quarterfinals. Cartaginés coach Amarini Villatoro stated that while Saprissa is a strong opponent, he considers both teams to be on equal footing. The match carries significant stakes, as the winner will advance to the semifinals and secure a spot in the 2027 CONCACAF Champions Cup.

Villatoro noted that his squad is focused and motivated, despite facing absences such as Andrey Mora due to injury and Douglas López due to a domestic suspension.

In addition to their regional tournament ambitions, Cartaginés is showing strong domestic form in the Apertura 2026 tournament. The team's offensive efficiency is highlighted by three players—Joaquín Alonso Hernández, Juan Carlos Gaete, and Geancarlo Castro—who account for 67% of the team's 15 goals scored so far. Cartaginés currently sits as the second-highest scoring team in the domestic league, trailing only Saprissa.
