Carter Prince sentenced to 17 years for Erickson home invasion

Carter Prince, 21, has been sentenced to 17 years in prison following a violent home invasion in Erickson in June 2023. Prince pleaded guilty to attempted murder after attacking Candace Richardson, who fought off the assailant after having her throat slashed.

During a victim impact statement in a Brandon courtroom, Richardson described the assault as a nightmare that continues to affect her daily life. She detailed severe injuries, including multiple lacerations to her head, face, chest, and limbs, noting that a piece of a butterfly knife used in the attack had to be surgically removed from her skull.

Justice Elliot Leven of the Manitoba Court of King’s Bench issued the sentence, taking into account Prince’s youth at the time of the crime, his guilty plea, his lack of a prior criminal record, and systemic factors regarding his status as an Indigenous offender.
