Carteret receives $9.6 million grant for electric ferry service

The Federal Transit Administration has awarded NJ Transit a $9.6 million grant to fund an electric, low-emission ferry boat for Carteret. This project will serve as the borough’s third ferry boat and is intended to establish a modern, environmentally responsible transit service.

The new ferry service aims to strengthen connections between Central Jersey and New York City, providing faster transportation options while helping to reduce roadway congestion on the NJ Turnpike. The Carteret Multimodal Ferry Terminal is currently under construction, with completion expected by December 2027, though service may begin earlier.
