Morocco and Israel agree to upgrade diplomatic missions to embassies

Morocco and Israel have agreed to upgrade their diplomatic missions to full embassies and exchange ambassadors. This decision, announced following a trilateral meeting in New York involving Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar, Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, and U.S. Ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz, aims to deepen ties established under the 2020 Abraham Accords.

The agreement includes plans to expand air links, finalize investment-protection and double-taxation treaties by the end of 2026, and conduct reciprocal high-level visits.

These diplomatic advancements have triggered widespread protests across Morocco. Demonstrators, organized by groups such as the Moroccan Front for Supporting Palestine and Against Normalisation and the Moroccan Committee for Supporting the Nation’s Causes, have held rallies in dozens of cities, including Rabat, Casablanca, and Marrakesh. Protesters have demanded an end to normalization and expressed solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza. In some cities, such as Tangier, authorities reportedly banned demonstrations, leading to clashes where security forces dispersed participants and detained over a dozen people.
