Casablanca Stock Exchange shows mixed performance amid sector divergence

The Casablanca Stock Exchange experienced mixed performance recently. For the week of August 31 to September 4, the flagship MASI index fell 0.73% to 18,792.25 points, while the MASI 20 index saw a slight increase of 0.29%. Sectoral performance varied significantly, with engineering and industrial equipment (-10.73%), agricultural industry (-5.17%), and pharmaceuticals (-4.86%) seeing the largest declines. Conversely, real estate and hotel management (+2.52%), banking (+1.52%), and health (+1.17%) showed gains.

Looking at broader monthly trends, the MASI index gained 4.53% in August, marking a return to positive momentum after two months of consolidation. However, brokerage firm BKGR suggests this rebound may represent a normalization following profit-taking rather than a broad-based rally. The market is increasingly characterized by divergence, where company-specific catalysts are driving performance more than general market momentum. This is evidenced by the surge in mining stocks, particularly Managem, which rose 31.16% in August to become the exchange’s largest company by market capitalization.

BKGR anticipates that September will serve as a test of selectivity for investors as they evaluate first-half results and upcoming decisions from Bank Al-Maghrib. Trading volumes have shown signs of improvement, with average daily volume rising in August, though central-market volumes remain down year-on-year.
