Casamance women's groups call for protection and empowerment
Women's organizations in the Casamance region of Senegal are highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by displaced populations returning to their homes. The Platform of Women for Peace in Casamance (PFPC) has issued an alert regarding the vulnerabilities of women and girls in resettlement areas, specifically noting increased risks of gender-based violence (GBV). A study involving 176 women and girls and 30 community leaders revealed that 50% of participants are aware of GBV cases, including physical, psychological, economic, and verbal violence. Furthermore, 59% of those surveyed reported not knowing where to direct survivors for assistance.
To address these issues, the PFPC recommends strengthening basic social services, improving access to water, electricity, and healthcare, and continuing demining efforts. They also advocate for economic empowerment and increased female participation in decision-making processes.
In a separate mobilization in Bignona, the Kiiraay women's movement reaffirmed its commitment to local development and peace. Leaders emphasized the need for economic empowerment through training and better access to economic opportunities. The movement also highlighted the importance of infrastructure projects, such as the construction of a level 2 military hospital and the rehabilitation of the Blouf loop, to improve healthcare access and regional connectivity.
