Casas Bahia files for judicial recovery to renegotiate R$ 17.3 billion debt FAST-MOVING
The Brazilian retail sector is facing significant distress as major players seek legal protection from creditors. Grupo Casas Bahia has filed for judicial recovery in São Paulo to renegotiate R$ 17.3 billion in debt. The filing, which includes nine companies within the group, follows a reported second-quarter loss of R$ 10.1 billion for 2026.
Casas Bahia attributed its financial deterioration to high interest rates, credit restrictions, and increased financing costs. As part of its ongoing transformation plan, the group has already closed 298 stores. Following the announcement, the company's shares experienced a 30% drop during market opening.
In a similar development, Marabraz has also filed for judicial recovery in the São Paulo Court of Justice, citing debts of R$ 140.2 million. Marabraz reported that its difficulties stem from liquidity issues and a loss of access to credit, compounded by changes in its historical family-based financial support structures.
