Casas Bahia closes 298 stores and lays off 1,900 employees

Casas Bahia is undergoing a major restructuring process, resulting in the closure of 298 stores and the dismissal of approximately 1,900 employees across Brazil. This move represents a reduction of nearly 30% of the retailer's physical footprint. The closures affect various regions, including states such as Paraná, Pernambuco, Bahia, and Mato Grosso do Sul.

The company is implementing these changes to reduce expenses, increase operational efficiency, and reorganize its finances. This strategy follows a period of significant financial pressure; in the first quarter of 2026, the company reported a net loss of R$ 1.064 billion, a substantial increase from the R$ 408 million loss recorded during the same period in 2025.

Alongside the physical downsizing, Casas Bahia has also adjusted its financial reporting schedule, postponing the release of its second-quarter results to allow for a more organized conclusion of the restructuring plan. The retailer continues to shift its focus toward e-commerce and the integration of artificial intelligence for inventory and pricing management.
