Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake risks in Portland
Portland and the broader Pacific Northwest are situated near the Cascadia Subduction Zone, one of North America's most powerful earthquake zones. This fault line, where the Juan de Fuca plate slides beneath the North American plate, stretches from Northern California to British Columbia.
Geological history indicates that the last major earthquake in this zone occurred in January 1700. Future seismic events are expected to cause intense, prolonged shaking across western Oregon and potentially trigger tsunamis along the coast. In addition to the subduction zone, Portland is also susceptible to local seismic activity from the Portland Hills Fault.
Seismic vulnerability varies by infrastructure. Many older homes in Portland, particularly on the east side, were built before modern seismic codes and may lack foundation bolting. Furthermore, the city contains numerous unreinforced masonry buildings that lack the steel reinforcement necessary to withstand significant shaking.
