Cascais residents petition for safety on Avenida Marginal

Residents of Cascais have launched a petition demanding improved safety measures on the Avenida Marginal, a 25-kilometer coastal road connecting Lisbon and Cascais. The initiative, led by the Associação de Moradores do Bairro Almirante Nunes da Mata (AMBA), has gathered over 1,700 signatures in just two weeks, far exceeding its initial local target.

Community members are calling for increased police surveillance, the installation of speed radars, and higher fines to combat speeding, illegal street racing, and noise pollution. The petition highlights a history of dangerous behavior and frequent accidents, including several fatalities over the last five years. A recent fatal accident involving a car crash occurred near Praia da Parede on Monday morning.

While the movement began in the Almirante Nunes da Mata neighborhood, support has expanded to include residents and commuters from the neighboring municipalities of Oeiras, Sintra, and Lisbon. The organizers are urging the Cascais Municipal Council, the Polícia de Segurança Pública (PSP), and Infraestruturas de Portugal (IP) to coordinate a response to the ongoing insecurity and disregard for traffic signage on the route.
