Cascais school inauguration triggers legal challenge over religious ceremony

The Association Republic and Laicity has formally requested that Portuguese judicial and oversight institutions investigate potential illegalities following a Catholic religious ceremony held during the inauguration of the Cascais Secondary School.

The event, which took place on September 21, included a blessing led by the Patriarch of Lisbon, Dom Rui Valério, and was attended by high-ranking officials including the President of the Republic, Prime Minister Luís Montenegro, and the Minister of Education, Science, and Innovation, Fernando Alexandre.

The Association sent letters to the President of the Religious Freedom Commission, the Attorney General, and the Ombudsman, arguing that integrating a religious ceremony into an official municipal act violates the non-confessional nature of public education. The group claims the event discriminated in favor of the Catholic community and potentially infringed upon the rights of students, teachers, and staff to not attend religious acts.

Discussions surrounding the incident highlight the tension between state secularism and religious expression in public institutions, specifically regarding whether the presence of religious rituals in schools undermines the principle of institutional neutrality.
