Cascais secondary school asbestos removal suspended
Asbestos removal works at the former Cascais Secondary School have been suspended following an inspection by the Authority for Working Conditions (ACT). The suspension follows reports of serious irregularities, including non-compliance with approved work plans, national legislation, and safety standards for asbestos removal.
The Portuguese association SOS Amianto had urgently requested the suspension, citing risks to the health and safety of the educational community. While Cascais Civil Protection previously stated that the removal process posed no danger to students, teachers, or staff at the newly inaugurated school building located adjacent to the old site, SOS Amianto maintains that there is no evidence to guarantee safety during active school hours.
The association has called for the works to be rescheduled during school holidays to safeguard public health and ensure that administrative schedules do not compromise the safety of children and workers.
