Case study examines nurse practitioner board complaint risks
A case study presented by CNA and NSO details the professional and legal risks faced by Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) during State Board of Nursing (SBON) investigations. The study focuses on a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) who faced allegations of unprofessional prescribing practices.
The allegations against the FNP included prescribing medications without a bona fide practitioner-patient relationship, working outside the FNP scope of practice, and violating prescriptive authority requirements set by practice agreements and the Committee of the Joint Boards. The investigation was reportedly prompted by a regulatory complaint and referral from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
