Caserta: Homeless man killed after brutal assault over 50-euro debt

Guido Roviello, a 62-year-old homeless man, died in a hospital on Friday, August 21, following a brutal assault in Piazza Sant’Anna, Caserta. Investigators from the Procura of Santa Maria Capua Vetere and the Guardia di Finanza have identified a 40-year-old Romanian national, also homeless, as the suspect. The man has been detained and faces charges of murder aggravated by futile motives.

The assault reportedly stemmed from a dispute over a debt of approximately 50 euros. Surveillance footage and witness videos captured the incident, showing the victim being repeatedly struck with punches and kicks to the head and chest. The suspect has reportedly confessed to the actions during interrogation.

The tragedy has sparked significant local reaction. Religious leaders, including the Archbishop of Capua, have condemned the violence and the perceived indifference of bystanders. Political figures have also called for increased security measures, such as enhanced video surveillance and social services to support vulnerable populations.
