Caserta: Homeless man Guido Roviello killed after assault over 50-euro debt
Guido Roviello, a 62-year-old homeless man, has died in a hospital in Caserta following a brutal assault in Piazza Sant'Anna. Investigators believe the attack was triggered by a debt of 50 euros.
The suspect, a 40-year-old Romanian national who was also living on the streets, was apprehended by the Guardia di Finanza. He has reportedly admitted to the crime and faces charges of aggravated homicide for futile motives. Surveillance footage and a video circulated on social media captured the violence, showing the victim being repeatedly struck with punches and kicks.
The incident has sparked significant local outcry regarding public safety, urban decay, and the treatment of vulnerable populations. Bishop Pietro Lagnese of Caserta condemned the indifference of bystanders who witnessed the attack without intervening, and the Diocese has offered to ensure a dignified burial for Roviello.
