Positano wildfire triggers landslide on Amalfi Coast highway

A large-scale wildfire broke out overnight in the Positano area of the Amalfi Coast, specifically affecting the Laurito and San Pietro localities. The blaze, fueled by dense vegetation and strong winds, spread rapidly across steep terrain, threatening residential homes and tourist facilities.

The fire caused a secondary emergency when the intense heat and ground instability triggered a landslide on the SS163 Amalfitana highway. This forced authorities to close the road between kilometers 16.0 and 16.8, disrupting traffic toward Praiano. While vehicular transit is suspended, pedestrian passage remains possible, and SITA bus services have been rerouted to the Montepertuso junction.

Firefighting efforts involved multiple teams from Naples, Nocera, Maiori, and Sorrento, supported by aerial water bombers. As of the latest reports, the fire front has been brought under control, and crews from Anas and local police are working to clear debris and ensure road safety. The recurring nature of fires in this region has prompted discussions regarding the use of drone technology for improved surveillance and prevention.
