Caserta tourist tax hike sparks protest from local hoteliers
The Caserta municipality confirmed that the local tourist accommodation tax will be raised starting 1 September. The increase was announced by the extraordinary commissioners without prior consultation with the hospitality sector.
Federalberghi, the association representing Caserta’s hoteliers, condemned the timing, warning that the abrupt rise will impose significant administrative burdens and costs on hotels. President Sebastiano Simone called for strict, territory‑wide inspections to ensure that all accommodation providers, including B&Bs that may currently evade the tax, pay the levy. He also noted that the tax revenues are partially subject to further taxation, reducing the net benefit to the municipal budget.
Federalberghi is demanding that the municipality guarantee rigorous controls so that compliant establishments are not unfairly penalised while non‑compliant operators continue to avoid contributions.
