Casey Stoner reflects on rivalry with Valentino Rossi
Former MotoGP champion Casey Stoner has reflected on his intense rivalry with Valentino Rossi, noting that while the Italian rider often used psychological tactics to intimidate competitors, those methods did not work on him. Speaking at the Festival dello Sport in Trento, Stoner explained that Rossi’s attempts to intimidate others outside of the track, particularly through the media, actually provided Stoner with additional motivation and a deeper understanding of his opponent.
Stoner highlighted Rossi’s ability to shape media narratives and influence public opinion to align with his own views. While acknowledging the tension during their years of competition—including famous clashes at Laguna Seca and Jerez—Stoner expressed profound respect for Rossi’s achievements and character. He stated that it would be ‘stupid not to learn’ from a figure who reached such heights in the sport, noting that he was a fan of Rossi even before they became rivals.
