Casio releases new SXC-1 portable sampler while vintage SK-8 gains collector interest

Casio announced the SXC-1 portable sampler, a modern take on its classic 1985 SK‑1. The device is slated for release in Japan at ¥39,930 (about £220) and includes more than 80 pre‑loaded sample banks from historic Casio instruments, 16 RGB performance pads, onboard sequencing, sample editing, and effects such as filters, flanger, phaser and bit‑crusher. It also features battery power, a built‑in speaker and USB‑C connectivity, positioning it as a handheld tool for music makers on the go.

Separately, the rare 1987 Casio SK‑8 8‑bit sampling keyboard has attracted collector interest. Modified with a 20‑point ROM modulation patch bay and illuminated effect switches, the SK‑8 offers four‑voice polyphony, four sample slots, and a range of built‑in sounds and rhythms. Its unique patch matrix allows unconventional sound manipulation, producing complex drones, bit‑crushed textures and other experimental audio effects.
