Casperlar and Çirkinler crime groups indicted for exploiting youths via social media
The Bakırköy Chief Public Prosecutor's Office has prepared a comprehensive indictment against organized crime groups known as "Casperlar" and "Çirkinler." The investigation highlights a new generation of criminal structures that leverage social media platforms, particularly TikTok and Instagram, to recruit members and propagate their activities.
According to the indictment, the gangs target vulnerable youths between the ages of 15 and 25 by showcasing luxury cars, motorcycles, and weapons online to create a false sense of wealth and power. They utilize psychological manipulation, often calling recruits "brother" or "nephew" to build false trust. Once recruited, many of these individuals are used as hitmen for violent acts, such as shootings, under the promise of large cash rewards. However, the indictment notes that many youths are defrauded, receiving only minimal amounts of money before being abandoned to face imprisonment or death.
Law enforcement identifies that these groups also use online gaming chat rooms, such as those in GTA or Fortnite, to issue criminal instructions and avoid detection. The investigation covers activities spanning multiple provinces, with the organization utilizing "cell houses" in various Istanbul districts to store weapons and house fugitives. The Casperlar group, allegedly led by İsmail Atız (code name "Hamuş"), is linked to multiple murders and numerous violent crimes.
