Caspian Sea water levels decline, threatening regional ecosystems
At the Caspian Ecological Summit in Turkmenistan, leaders from the five bordering nations warned of an accelerating decline in the Caspian Sea's water levels. The total surface area of the sea has decreased by more than 20,000 square kilometers, according to reports from Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and other regional leaders.
Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that the water level is dropping by an average of nine centimeters annually, a trend he attributed primarily to climate change. He noted that the receding shoreline has already impacted the Russian coast by 20,000 square kilometers over the last two decades. Kazakhstan's President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev reported that the sea level on the Kazakh coast has dropped by approximately 29.5 meters, with the sea area shrinking by over 16,000 square kilometers in 25 years.
To address these environmental and economic threats, which include risks to biodiversity, fisheries, and port infrastructure, several initiatives were proposed. Russia is developing a research program through 2030 and has suggested creating an AI-powered digital twin of the sea to model changes. Leaders also discussed the need for an action plan through 2036 and the establishment of a special commission to investigate the causes of the decline.
