Cassa Depositi e Prestiti denies Mts takeover rumors

Cassa Depositi e Prestiti (CDP) has denied involvement in a potential takeover of Mts, the electronic trading platform for government bonds. This follows recent reports suggesting the Italian state-owned lender might acquire the 63% stake currently held by Euronext for an estimated €600 million.

Euronext has defended the platform, describing Mts as a ‘strategic asset’ and reaffirming its commitment to its development. The platform is a major European wholesale market for sovereign debt, handling daily volumes exceeding €265 billion and generating nearly €200 million in annual revenue with a 65% profitability rate.

Founded in 1988 by the Italian Treasury and the Bank of Italy, Mts was privatized and integrated into Borsa Italiana before being acquired by Euronext in 2021. While some observers viewed a potential repurchase as a way to maintain national control over debt infrastructure, CDP has officially stated, ‘We are not involved in any operation.’
