Cassano Ionio and Castello di Città see rising crime, officials demand stronger police presence

In Cassano all’Ionio, an attempted robbery at a Carrefour store in the town centre resulted in a harmless blank‑cartridge discharge but no injuries. Local Confcommercio president Mimmo Lione condemned the act, calling it “an episode of inaudita gravità” and urged municipal authorities to boost patrols, improve video‑surveillance and keep the police visible, especially during peak hours.

In Castello di Città, a 46‑year‑old man was assaulted by a so‑called “baby gang,” prompting the municipal council to describe the violence as “inaccettabile.” The council asked regional politicians for additional law‑enforcement resources and for dedicated spaces for young people, warning that unchecked street aggression threatens community safety.

Both municipalities are pressing for heightened security measures to counter what they see as an unsettling rise in criminal incidents.
