Cassius Mailula discusses challenges abroad following return to Mamelodi Sundowns

Mamelodi Sundowns striker Cassius Mailula has discussed the challenges he faced during his recent period playing abroad. The 25-year-old forward returned to South Africa after a stint in Major League Soccer with Toronto FC and a subsequent loan spell at Belgian Pro League club KV Kortrijk.

Mailula attributed his lack of consistent playing time in Belgium to tactical integration, stating, “It’s about a club having a plan around you. It’s about knowing when they want you, how are they going to use you because they know my qualities before I come to the club.” He expressed a desire to be utilized according to his specific strengths to better demonstrate his talent.

Despite the difficulties in Europe, Mailula noted that the experience provided valuable lessons and exposure to different coaching methods and tactical demands. Since rejoining Mamelodi Sundowns, he has regained form, scoring three goals this season and earning a recall to the South African national team, Bafana Bafana, under coach Pitso Mosimane.
