Campania seeks EU PGI status for Castagna del Partenio
The application for the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) for ‘Castagna del Partenio’ has been published in the Official Journal of the European Union. This marks a decisive step toward official European recognition for the chestnut variety produced across 22 municipalities in the provinces of Avellino, Benevento, Caserta, and Naples.
With this new designation, the Campania region establishes a European record for the highest number of PGI certifications dedicated to chestnut production. The ‘Castagna del Partenio’ joins four existing regional certifications: Castagna di Montella, Marrone di Roccadaspide, Marrone di Serino/Castagna di Serino, and Castagna di Roccamonfina.
The initiative is led by the Consorzio Distretto della Castagna e del Marrone della Campania, in collaboration with local institutions and the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forestry. The strategic goal is to bring approximately 80% of Campania’s chestnut groves under European quality labels to enhance market competitiveness and protect local producers.
