Court maintains R$ 30.1 million in judicial deposits at BRB

The Court of Justice of the Federal District and Territories (TJDFT) has denied a request by Grupo Casas Bahia to transfer R$ 30.1 million in judicial deposits from Banco de Brasília (BRB) to other financial institutions. The decision, issued on October 27, keeps the funds linked to a legal dispute regarding ICMS tax collection.

Judge Leonardo Roscoe Bessa ruled that there was no concrete evidence of risk to justify moving the money. He noted that judicial deposits are distinct from common bank investments, as they are held by the judiciary and do not form part of a bank's freely usable assets. The Attorney General's Office of the Federal District (PGDF) argued that the choice of the depository institution is not a decision for the parties involved in the lawsuit and warned that allowing individual transfers of large sums could set a precedent that affects the liquidity and resource availability of BRB.
