Spain celebrates autumn traditions including Castanyada and Halloween
Various regions across Spain are observing seasonal traditions marking the transition to winter, characterized by a coexistence of traditional autumn festivals and modern Halloween celebrations.
In Catalonia and parts of the Baix Vallès, the Castanyada is being celebrated with the roasting of chestnuts, the consumption of panellets, and traditional sweets. Some municipalities are also hosting Halloween events, including horror tunnels and themed workshops for children.
In Asturias, the Amagüestu tradition involves gathering around bonfires to roast chestnuts and share cider. Meanwhile, in Galicia, the Samaín festival, rooted in Celtic origins, marks the end of the harvest and the beginning of the dark season.
Religious institutions in provinces like Huelva and Antequera are promoting Holywins, an initiative designed to celebrate All Saints' Day through activities that focus on the lives of saints rather than the spooky themes of Halloween. In León, the Güeste de Ánimas tradition continues to be reenacted, featuring spectral figures in white robes to honor the deceased.
