Castel Ritaldi authorities investigate illegal abandonment of poultry

Carabinieri in Castel Ritaldi, Perugia, have reported the illegal abandonment of dozens of chickens in a ditch. While many carcasses were found in a state of decomposition, five Hi-Line Brown hens were discovered alive but in critical condition due to a lack of food and water.

Investigations suggest the animals originated from a poultry farm that is being decommissioned. The hens were reportedly abandoned because they were no longer considered profitable for egg production. A collaborator of the farm owner has been reported to authorities for violating laws regarding animal abandonment and detention in incompatible conditions.

The surviving hens have been seized and transferred to a specialized facility for medical care. Additionally, the Istituto zooprofilattico di Perugia is conducting health assessments to check for the presence of avian influenza.
