Castel Sant’Elmo to reopen following external wall collapse

Castel Sant’Elmo in Naples is scheduled to reopen to the public on August 24 following a temporary closure caused by the collapse of an external wall. The incident occurred in the early morning hours near the main entrance gate. While the wall involved is not part of the Musei Nazionali del Vomero complex, the collapse caused damage to an electrical generator, leading to widespread power outages within the castle.

Preliminary investigations suggest that uncontrolled vegetation on the inner wall may have compromised the structural integrity of the perimeter, causing tuff blocks to detach. No injuries were reported during the incident. Firefighters, Carabinieri, and Civil Protection volunteers were deployed to secure the site.

Director Almerinda Padricelli confirmed that visitors who purchased tickets for the days the site was closed will be eligible for refunds. Technical inspections in coordination with the Campania Region will continue in the coming days to ensure full safety. During the reopening, access to the Piazza d’Armi will follow a modified route directed by on-site staff.
