Castellammare del Golfo approves preliminary General Urban Plan
The municipal council of Castellammare del Golfo has approved the preliminary document for the new General Urban Plan (PUG). This planning tool is designed to replace the current general regulatory plan, which can no longer be updated. The new PUG aims to regulate the protection, enhancement, and transformation of the territory with a focus on sustainability, soil protection, environmental conservation, and urban regeneration.
Under Sicilian urban planning law, this preliminary document holds legal value and can govern the transitional period until final approval. It identifies specific areas where development permits may be issued and establishes parameters for implementation, while also designating zones where permit issuance is suspended to prevent old urban forecasts from undermining the new plan's objectives.
The development of the PUG involved technical meetings with Mayor Enrico Trantino, urban planning assessor Luca Sangiorgio, and designer Biagio Bisignani. The process included contributions from citizens and various entities, supported by specialized studies in geology, agronomy, forestry, and socio-economics. Experts noted that Castellammare del Golfo is among the first municipalities in Sicily to apply the procedures established by the 2020 regional urban planning law.
